This means that all businesses now have more flexibility in how they manage their provision of first aid in the workplace, however all employers’ legal duties (The Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981) require employers to provide adequate and appropriate equipment, facilities and personnel to ensure that all employees receive immediate attention if they are injured or taken ill at work.
These Regulations apply to all workplaces including those with less than 5 employees and for those who are self-employed.
What is ‘adequate and appropriate’ will depend on the circumstances in each specific workplace. This includes whether trained first-aiders are required, what needs to be included in a first-aid box and if a first-aid room is required. All employers should carry out an assessment of first-aid needs to determine what to provide.
What the regulations don’t do is place a legal duty on employers to make first-aid provision for non-employees such as the public or children in schools. However, the HSE strongly endorses that non-employees are included in an assessment of first-aid needs and that provision is made for them.

Delivering our Training – Our fully qualified staff are all from an emergency service background. To enable us to carry out our training all we require from you is a quiet room on your premises and sufficient seating to accommodate the trainees. We will supply all the training tools required, including projectors etc. Trainiees will be required to wear clothing suitable for the course to enable them to be placed in First Aid Positions. This is a hands-on course and participation is mandatory.
Certification – Successful candidates receive a certificate.
